The Code Wizard's Musings

Diary of a husband, father and coder

Ouch! Owwweee!

Here's an interesting tidbit. This article illustrates what happens when management does not understand critical technology they are using (and selling): Reuters loses right to use crucial IM technology The short story is Rueter's did not pay a $150K bill on time, and the licensor would not extend the purchase terms past the deadline. So now Reuters has to renegotiate a new contract after paying almost $2M. Using 3rd party code is a heavy responsibility.

DAO - It's still useful (and fast enough)

clock July 24, 2008 19:59 by author gharris
I've updated my work with DAO, and changes caused by windows update KB950749 This work spells out how to use DAO as a COM import in Visual Studio 2005. It also explains the changes you need to implement to your source code after KB 950749 is applied. The updated article is located in my wiki at DAO - It's still useful (and fast enough).

Combining app.config files for an exe and a dll

clock July 22, 2008 20:27 by author gharris
I've written a short test solution that illustrates reading the app.config file from a dll and the application exe. The trick is to combine the two app.config files correctly.  You will need VS 2005 to compile and execute the example program.

AppConfigTest.zip (18.61 kb)

11 reasons America's a new socialist economy

clock July 21, 2008 17:04 by author gharris

Paul Farrell hits the nail on the head!

Twenty some odd years ago, I was sitting on the shore of Blue Lake (Vermillion Bay, Ontario), reading a Winnipeg newspaper.  An op-ed piece from a conservative MP shocked me. He sounded more liberal than the left wing elements of the Democratic Party in 1984!

America is now in the same place. There are no conservatives or liberals, Democrats or Republicans (or moral leaders of either persuasion) inside the Beltway. There is only greed, lobbyists and politicians running for re-election. Forty two thousand lobbyists run this country. Wallstreet suits are unloading debt on to the tax payer's back as fast as the treasury can print. And we, the tax payers, continue to borrow like there is no tomorrow.

Release 4 of WinROTT Source Code

clock July 17, 2008 21:33 by author gharris

I managed to complete the port of rt_actor.c to rt_actor.cpp. There are some source code changes, and a lot of changes to header files so both C and C++ files will compile and link properly. The source code may be downloaded from my WinROTT page. Please let me know if you have any problems.

I will be taking a break from WinROTT for a couple of weeks to enjoy the summer with my children. I will be updating some porting notes in my wiki. I have some notes regarding function and enum declarations a developer needs to watch out for when porting from C to C++. Please have fun playing WinROTT! Enjoy the summer.
