I wasted entirely too much time today setting up a home domain server this weekend.
I rescued an 5 year old HP Pavilion a1250n computer a couple of weeks ago, upgraded the RAM to 4GB (of which 3.31GB is useful) and installed a 1 TB Seagate 7200 RPM drive with 64MB of cache.
Thanks to MS Dreamspark, I obtained a copy of Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2. (Yes, I am attending school.) I spent most of the weekend getting VS 2010 Team Foundation Server installed and debugged. I still have a lot to learn before I can actually start using the software. Unlike Visual Source Safe, TFS is a large and complex system. Happily, I was able to resolve all of the minor and major event log entries, and I seem to have a nice system that is rocking along without errors (so far.)
I haven't used TFS ever in my career, so I am looking forward to learning this new system.
