I don't make the kind of money that I can afford to go blow 2 grand on a TV. I was hoping the Circuit City liquidation might give me the chance to pick up a decent flat screen TV at a reasonable price.
All I can say is, don't waste your time.
The prices were lower across the street at Best Buy. And the prices were even lower at Wal Mart. However, Walmart gets my vote. The original purpose of the trip was to replace a 13" analog TV I keep in our bathroom. I like to catch the weather and news before I go to work. That particular TV is a Toshiba, has a built in VHS tape player and can also be powered using my car's cigaretter lighter. It's analog and going away in February. The lowest cost flat screen I could find was about $250, including sales taxes. I was hoping to come in around $100. However, Walmart has a Magnavox 13" with a built in DVD player and at digital tuner for $140, including taxes. So much for flat screen and HDTV.
I don't know who was counting the dollars when this digital switch was mandated, but I think paying thousands for a TV is just plain ridiculous, and I ain't gonna do it. Besides, I can buy a $40 USB adapter from Hauppauge and watch HD TV on my daughter's laptop if it's all that important. The good news is I spend less time in front of the tube today than I did 10 years ago. In my opinion, most shows are not much more than foul mouthed trash centered around teen age sex and married people having affairs. Neither of those subjects appeals to me very much. Thank goodness for PBS, National Geographic Channel and the occasional college football game on TV.
