Perhaps we should heed Thomas Jefferson: “A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.”

Another Jefferson quote I ran across a few minutes ago: "Democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not."

It's a witches brew: compassion for the less fortunate versus the need for a productive society. When we start legislating compassion, particularly for political reasons, then things get distorted and the gains of the productive are confused with the need to redistribute wealth because of "inequalities".
